Health Expert Series 9

New year, new dreams, new expert on our health series! In our last edition we talked about how we are all experts on our bodies and we all know what we need to do, sometimes we just need some help getting to the answer we all have inside us.

This month I want to introduce a fellow Health Coach and Luxembourger! Kris Oak Mendez is a fantastic health advocate and cares deeply about her own and your health!

Here is Kris Oak:

Name, age, occupation: Kristin Eyschen, 29, Holistic Health Coach

What does health mean to you?

It means that you understand and respect the signs your body is giving you. Knowing when you need to rest, when you need to exercise more or when you need to change something about your diet. It also means, you know when you should make yourself and your own well-being a priority and acting upon it.
Health means feeling full of energy, light and happy, so your body and mind can deal with anything that comes along.
Healthy also means, having a healthy relationship with food, not feeling guilty and bad about what you eat, even if that’s the occasional piece of chocolate cake, pizza or similar.

How do you achieve this level of healthy?

Through eating foods that nurture your body, which give you and your body the energy it needs. Through exercising regularly, and that doesn’t mean you must go to the gym, if you don’t like that, it can be hiking, climbing, hula hooping or whatever you like.
Being healthy doesn’t come overnight and is a process that takes time and loads of patience and educating yourself and learning how to listen to your body.
It is as much mind-set work as it is nutrition and exercise and accepting that we are all human and that we sometimes make mistakes. These mistakes will help you know yourself even better and learn even more about yourself.

If you really want to be healthy long-term, you must find a way to change your lifestyle sustainably.

Why is it important to be and live healthily?

I think in our world nowadays, we experience so much stress and pressure from the outside but also from ourselves. Living a healthy and mindful life is the only thing that can keep you sane long-term.
We are constantly influenced through advertisements and brands that we should buy their brands and follow their programmes because they will make us beautiful, healthy and fit in no time. We tend to believe and buy into this stuff because we are hoping there is some sort of magic pill out there. But there is no such thing, being healthy means making educated choices about what we eat, exercise regularly and being committed to ourselves and our own health and well-being.

Why are you an expert?

I went through a difficult phase myself, where I had a mental breakdown. I didn’t know how to listen to the signs my body gave me. I have experienced both, what it means to be very unhealthy and unhappy and what it means to really change your life around and be healthy and content.
For the biggest part of my life, I had no idea what I wanted to do. But as soon as I learned about health coaching, I knew, I found my true calling. It is something I am truly passionate about. I love to help and guide people towards a healthy lifestyle and to help them find out what works for them and what doesn’t.

What is your top health tip?

Change habits incrementally and leave room for mistakes and days that feel off. If for example you’d like to exercise more but haven’t exercised in a while. Don’t try to go from 0 to 100 by saying you’ll go to the gym 5 times per week. Start small, maybe with taking one class at the gym per week. Then, with this small goal, be committed, make sure that every week you’re taking this class for one month.
Then re-evaluate, do you enjoy this class at the gym, if yes, maybe add one more per week.

What do you think? Do you agree with Kris?

Kris and I connected because we have very similar views on life and health, so I do agree with her views and I have quite similar answers myself – read more here.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to Kris if you wish to have a chat with her!
