Strict Meal Plans and Exercise Routine? I say NO!

Everywhere I go I see adverts for meal plans and exercise programs with overwhelming promises, especially this time of year when the dreaded season of overindulgence begins. We are all conscious about the fact that we will be eating and drinking more than usual during this season and come January we have regrets and start looking for these adverts I am talking about.

Fitness centres have the fittest person on earth on their posters and personal trainers are showing off their abs and we think that if you train with them we can get the same killer abs. I used to think that if I only sign up for the gym, I would naturally lose weight! Has this happened to you? I never went to the gym, but just the notion of actually signing up and having the card in my wallet should be enough to lose weight and get the body I was dreaming of having… crazy right?

Health Expert Series 8

Here we go! 8th edition of the Health Expert Series!

Most people I talk to are quite uncomfortable with being called an expert and I want to clarify this. We are all experts! Anyone who cares about themselves and their health is an expert. We all know what we need and what our bodies need! We just need to listen!

Our bodies are constantly talking to us. If you have a headache or a back ache or are exceptionally tired – these are all ways your body is talking to you. You just need to figure out what it is telling you and what it needs. Most headaches can be cured by simply drinking more water! Think about it! What is your body telling you? Find a calm space, quiet your mind and try to feel your body. What is it saying to you?

Someone who is really an expert in listening to her inner self is my friend, Ana. She is a Reiki Master, a Self Healing Instructor and owner of A Magical Butterfly; a self healing studio that also offers pilates and yoga classes among other things. Check out all their offers here.

Name, age, occupation: Ana Vargas, 41 years old, Reiki Master and Self Healing Instructor

What does health mean to you?

For me health is equal to balance and is a good combination of taking care of yourself and enjoying your life as it is.

How do you achieve this level of healthy?

I truly believe that we have 4 bodies (Spirit, Mind, Emotions and Physical body) and I pay attention of practicing things that will help to keep my 4 bodies in a good shape.

I always ask for the help of experts in those fields to learn, to improve and to nourish my soul, my mind and body.

Also accepting my emotions helps me to have a deeper connection with my body and to know what do I need in terms of practices, sports, food, fun and rest!!!

Why is it important to be and live healthily?

For me it is a way to honour life by loving myself and to have the energy and a positive attitude to create a wonderful adventure.

I love being alive and I will do my best to fully live it according to my dreams and needs.

As a mother of 2 wonderful kids I also want to have the energy and a healthy heart to enjoy the road with them!!!

Why are you an expert?

I don’t consider myself an expert, I am just someone passionate about living in balance and helping people to find how to live with ease and joy.

I will continue improving myself through my own practice and through the sharing moments with my loved ones, friends and clients 🙂

What is your top health tip?

Love yourself and respect yourself!!!

Do you overeat?

I used to overeat all the time. At least once a day I would eat so much that it felt like my stomach was being expanded. For some reason, I would just continue to fill the plate with food and eat. It felt horrible. I would be so uncomfortable afterwards that I wouldn’t be able to stand or sit or lay down. Every time I would promise myself that I wouldn’t do this anymore but as soon as the feeling went away I forgot about it and started over again.

Why was a treating myself this way? Why was I punishing myself like this?

I remember talking to my partner about it. As you might remember, he is the skinny one I have written about before. He would tell me that he never overate, because it would make him feel sick. I was surprised, because that is how I would feel too, but I did it anyway!

Why was I doing this to myself?

Things started to change when I started loving myself more, really liking and loving myself. The thing is that you would never treat a friend like this, would you? Would you force your best friend to eat until completely stuffed so she would feel incredibly uncomfortable? NO you wouldn’t! So why do we do this to ourselves? Why do we allow ourselves to be treated like this?

I overate again this weekend. We had raclette, you know melted cheese over potatoes, and it was just soooooo yummy. When I had my last bite I felt the familiar expanding of my stomach and I thought “shoot, why didn’t I stop many mouthfuls ago?”. I then remembered that I used to do this to myself ALL the time!! I am happy to report that it had been a while!

With my new found self-love and self-confidence I am now treating my body better. I exercise, I eat healthier, I eat less and I eat more mindfully! All part of treating myself how I deserve to be treated!

If you overeat, then take minute to think about why you do it? I think for me, I was trying to avoid feeling pain or uncertainties by stuffing myself until I felt numb. Don’t do this! Find a way to love your self and treat yourself right and how you deserve to be treated! Life is too short to settle, also with your self!

Love yourself today!!

Show yourself!

In my last post, I told you about my life as a non-smoker, but what I didn’t tell you is everything I learnt about myself when I finally quit!

I discovered how much I had used cigarettes to hide behind. To hide whom I really was. When I quit I had to learn who to be and how to act in many situations. How could I strike up a conversation without cigarettes? How could I keep a conversation going and not fill the awkward silences with cigarettes? How should I talk on the phone, wait for a bus and how should I finish a dinner without lighting up? What about breaks at work? Oh, and the big one: how to party and enjoy drinks without cigs?

I had to reinvent myself. Who was I when I couldn’t use cigarettes to hide behind? It was very tough, but I did learn so much about myself. And I gained so much confidence, because I understood that I didn’t need to hide behind anything anymore.

You know these inspirational posts on Facebook: be who you are, it is enough? I would nod at them and say: “yes, yes, I know”. But, you know what? I didn’t REALLY get them.

Until now!

I really am enough! I really am amazing. And people who don’t like me the way I am should just scram!

I get it now!

Many people use food in the similar way, including me. When things get tough, we create quite literally a fat layer to keep people at a distance. We hide behind food. I get it! It’s comforting. It doesn’t talk back. It doesn’t expect you to be anything but yourself.

I want you to take a deep breath now and imagine a life where you could be yourself at all times, just as you are. To be to the outside world, as you are when you are alone with your food, or your cigarette or whatever “drug” you use to hide behind.

It’s really scary, right?

But it’s also wonderful. It is such a relief. It’s so relaxing to not constantly have to worry about what other people may or may not think of you. To just be. To just do what makes YOU happy! To dress and walk, to smile and laugh, dance and sing, just the way you are!

This is a scary and life changing process and I know that I couldn’t do it alone. Well, you don’t have to! Let me help you. Let me guide you to discover who you really are! Learn how to love yourself and never have to hide again.

Get in touch and tell me about your struggles and what you want to achieve.

Don’t waste another day hiding – show yourself!!

I want to see you!
