Coaching vs therapy

I’m often asked about the difference is between coaching and therapy. The simple answer is that therapy looks at your past and tries to make sense of it. Coaching looks at your present and where you want to go in the future. 

Coaches and therapist use many of the same tools, so they are linked and intertwined. For instance, in processing feelings. Having an emotion doesn’t mean there is something wrong with you. It just means you are human. 

Psychologist focus more on the medical model of fixing something that has gone wrong or is wrong. Like going to the doctor, he will give you something to help fix a problem. A therapist is the doctor of the mind and will fix problems of the mind. Maybe a past trauma or an underlying belief that is making the patient depressed or act out in self destructive behaviours. Therapists help people with mental health problems, like clinical depression and other major metal illness. 

In coaching, we don’t fix anything, because there is nothing wrong with you. I don’t diagnose or prescribe medication. I help you to discovery yourself, find out who you truly are and what you want for yourself in the future. I help you to free stuck emotions and help you see the beautiful being that you are. I help you grow as a person and find out what you really want to get out of life. 

Coaching is a great way to start your self-discovery journey and can serve as a gentle entry point, if you are not fully ready to go really deep yet. I don’t need to know your story for you to benefit from coaching. You can share as much as you feel safe with. Coaching can prepare you to become ready to face challenges you weren’t fully ready to face yet, at which point it could be interesting to see a psychologist. 

Coaching can also be a tool to use after therapy to focus on learning more about yourself and finding out what you want out of your future. I can help you create a vision for your future and help you get there. 

There is no right or wrong way of doing it. I think it is beautiful whenever someone wants to look inwards and discover more about themselves and I fully honour that. How coaching can help you move forward after childhood trauma

What’s important to know about trauma is that 

“Trauma is not caused by what happened to you, it is caused by how you and others respond to what happens to you”. 

Everyone experiences something hurtful and when we respond by feeling the hurt and releasing the emotions, then they are not stuck. When we process and digest those emotions, they move through us. However, when we fight the feelings, resist them or push them away, that’s when we get traumatized. All human beings have the same basic desires. They want to be seen, they want to be heard and they want to know that they matter to the world. Coaching offers exactly that. A coach listens intensively and is wildly curious about the client. The client discovers that they are more than their trauma, that they have skills and strengths that are important in the world. 

When you grow up experiencing trauma, often you don’t know who you really are, because you weren’t allowed to be that person. Discovering who you are and knowing what you want in life, is your path healing and living a happy, fulfilled life. Coaching is an experience where you get to know yourself on a deep and conscious level while learning to love and accept yourself exactly as you are. It’s a truly transformational journey. 

Everyone is different and unique, and so are you. Your story is unique to you and therefore your healing journey is unique to you. Your healing journey is a process and coaching can be a piece of the puzzle in your healing journey.
