Are you hungry in the mornings?

FullSizeRender-8

My body doesn’t react very well to late dinners. My stomach needs some time to digest. Normally I eat about 3-4 hours before going to bed. This is a good time to allow my body to digest everything and letting it focus on going to sleep.

Yesterday all our meals were shifted and dinner ended up being very late. I could have delayed my bedtime, but as I have small children I was not going to do that – you never know when I have to get up again… but this meant that I went to bed while still digesting.

Not only is the body busy digesting and can therefore not rest properly, but the body is also horizontal, which doesn’t exactly help the food go downward.

All night I felt like the potatoes were coming up again – sorry for the colorful image.

As a result, this morning I was not hungry (nor rested). So what is the best thing to do?

Skip breakfast?

It’s the most important meal a day!

If I skip it I will feel hungry before lunch! But if I eat something I will feel extremely full and uncomfortable.

So what should I do?

I think it’s important to feel hungry in the morning. It’s a good tell-tale sign that you have eaten the right amount of food the day before. And you can start your day feeling great and energetic after hydrating and feeding yourself a healthy breakfast. This also increases your chances of making healthy food choices for the rest of the day.

But life is not perfect and sometimes we slip. Like I did yesterday. This morning, instead of having my normal breakfast, I settled for a small yoghurt. A little later I was hungry again, so I had an apple. This should balance my blood sugar until lunch and then I am back on track for the rest of the day.

Are you hungry when you wake up? If not, have you ever considered it may be because you eat too late?

Getting back to normal

blog 17

I have stopped breastfeeding and as a consequence my hormones are changing. Any woman that has gone through this, knows that this is no fun! It’s an emotional rollercoaster! One minute I cry, the next I am angry! What is going on!?!?

I am longing to get back to normal.

One problem though!

I still don’t fit into my regular clothes 🙁

When you become pregnant, almost your whole wardrobe needs changing. The difficult part is that you don’t know how big you will be and when (i.e. in which season). I have spent so much money on clothes and bras, for both during pregnancy and after pregnancy and so much of it I have never used.

Now, I am still not at my pre-pregnancy size and it’s frustrating trying to find something to wear, that I feel good in.

This in-between-phase sucks!

I know these changes are temporary and I will soon get back to my normal female rhythm. At least the thought of that keeps me sane. Although the normal rhythm also has it’s drawbacks – if you know what I mean?

*Sigh* the downside of being a woman!

In any case, another thing that keeps me going is that I will soon start training again. In a few weeks I’ll be going back to my beloved boxing training! I cannot wait! Other joyful news is that I have started “yoga with baby”-classes with the wonderful Lorien! I love the stretching and I love that I can bring my baby.

As you can see, I try to focus on the happy and good things, although it is hard some days – especially because we still don’t sleep fully at night! But hopefully the last kilos will vanish quickly so I can fit into my jeans and feel like myself again.

Becoming meatless

No Chicken Got Real

Weren’t we always told that chicken is good for you. It contains lots of protein, so it fills you up for a long time. And if you eat it without the skin, then it’s practically fat-free. Therefore, chicken is one of the best things to eat when maintaining your weight or when you want to lose weight. Right?

Over the years I have eaten a lot of chicken, thinking it was good for me. There was just one thing I was overlooking. I don’t like chicken!

Chicken breast is tasteless and boring, in my opinion. The thighs and wings are nicer to eat but usually mostly fat. Chicken, in any sandwich or meal, like chicken curry or something like that, is often over cooked and very dry. Blah!

Now, that I am learning all these new things about food, I am also learning that what works for one person, doesn’t mean it will work for someone else. One persons food, can be another persons poison. I am not saying that chicken is my poison, but I am asking myself, why have I been eating it for so many years if I don’t really like it?

Not anymore. I have decided to cut out chicken from my diet. And meat! I have never been fond of meat either. Again, I have eaten it because I have been told that it is good for me. Even the government thinks I should eat it! Every food pyramid issued by the government contains meat and chicken as recommendation.

But is it really good for me?

For a few weeks now I have cut out meat and chicken and I feel great. I feel lighter somehow. As if my body doesn’t need to work too hard to digest what I eat. I don’t have this heavy feeling in my body after I eat. Do you know the feeling I am talking about?

My conscious also feels better. I have unfortunately also learnt how animals are treated, when being prepared to fill the shelves in the supermarkets, especially chicken! I don’t have anything against people eating meat. We are at the top of the food chain. But there are other ways to treat animals, I think.

For your health, it is a good idea to cut down on meat. Some people opt for one meatless day a week (meatless Mondays) or eat vegetarian from Monday to Friday. Some people are vegetarian during the day until 6pm and then eat whatever they want. It’s up to you to find what works best for you!

I challenge you to go meatless for a few days and see how your body feels. Do you feel lighter? Do you feel any different or is it all the same? Let me know in the comment section below. I am really interested in hearing what has worked for you!

Get to know your body better. After all, you have to live with it for the rest of your life 😉 And most importantly, be kind to yourself.
